Boucetta Moulay Abderrahman (artist name: Abdoul Art) was born in Marrakesh (Morocco) in a traditional music-family. Inspired through his parents long-established music-style he started to sing and play from the early age. From young he observed the social problems around him - that his family was one victim of too - and he developed a critical eye on the injustice in his own country. He left school and started to work. He was reading about history and the liberation movement. South Africa was suffering under apartheid during this time and the pictures on tv made his rebellion grow. In his spare time he was very sportive and indentured with a local sportsclub. Beside that he was active in different youth and social organizations. In 1990, a few years after his father died, he thought about immigrating to Europe. He left his job in the hotel and went to Rome. For the first time a young African finds himself confronted with a new world. As an immigrant, with no resident permission, life became hard and a daily fight. He retried his chance in sport and signed a contract with “AS Roma”. As a semiprofessional he realized some success but left the competition after one year. His Dreadlocks started to grow and he sold souvenirs to tourists in the street. …always risking to be arrested by the police he had to run several times. In December 1993 he left Italy and came to Berlin. In the next few years he found himself confronted with racism and the hard weather conditions. The artist, known as Abdoul, began his career just like every other musician. He was listening to the radio, went to clubs and bought the music he was interested in. His musical influences include Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Alpha Blondy. He started composing his own songs and sang them. In 1996 he build his cave of the house he was living in, into a rehearsal room. He invited musician friends to play and arrange his songs with him. In 1998 he joined the band “Yadiss” as lead vocalist and won in a music competition of the senate in the category “Best Song”. Following he recorded three of his songs in demo quality. In the year 2000 he founded his own band “The Herbalitz” and performed live for the first time. Within six months he gave four concerts. At last he played in September 2001 at the “Yaam Open Air Festival” (Mama Africa). After his local success he withdrawed himself from public and continued with his composings and developing/maturing his powerful voice. Related items |
