“I am painting because I like it”, says Rashid Mohammed Rummy, a painter from Sri Lanka living in Hikkaduwa, a tourist town in South-East Sri Lanka. Kongoi Productions met Rashid recently at his gallery, where he and other painters are exhibiting and selling their unique paintings.Rashid, or Rummy as his nick-name goes, has been painting for the past 20 years and is among five best known painters in Hikkaduwa. He is sharing his gallery with another painter, T.G. Susantha. After the Tsunami wreak havoc the coastline of Hikkaduwa in 2004, life is now pretty much back to normal and the town is bustling with tourists, beach parties and a myriad of small scale businesses. Hikkaduwa is half an hour drive from Galle and two hours from Colombo.
“My painting style has been very much influenced by George Kid, a very famous Sri Lankan painter as well as Pablo Picasso”, says Rummy. According to him his customers are mostly English people and he has occasionally exported his paintings to France.
