Saturday 7 March 2009, 7.45pmAn evening of uplifting world music celebrating harmony between Muslims, Jews and Christians with celebrated ensemble Berakah and special guest speaker Karen Armstrong. Armstrong, a former Catholic nun, is the best-selling British author of numerous works on comparative religion, and first rose to prominence with her highly successful A History of God. Berakah is a world-music ensemble featuring musicians from Muslim, Jewish and Christian backgrounds. Following a UK tour last year, they come to Southbank Centre, in association with Spiro Ark, a London-based charity that organizes Jewish cultural events. Karen Armstrong, the bestselling author of A History of God, will speak at this event. 'It is music to make you close your eyes and dance in your head, an arresting confection of jazzy improvisation, catchy Middle Eastern chords and the beat of the darabuka drum’ (Times). Spiro Ark was established by Nitza and Robin Spiro. Spiro Ark aims to teach and enthuse about Jewish history and culture, both because of the intrinsic fascination of these subjects, and because of the central role of Jewish education in maintaining a Jewish sense of identity in the 21st century.
