Fuego de Rumba - Gypsy Music at its best!
From Paris, France. Fuego de Rumba is a group of six gypsy musicians living in Paris, France. The group has existed in 15 years and is still going strong with tours scheduled for USA next year.
As they put it "...we wish to play and bring our music all around the world."
The group has released a twelve track CD "Fuego de Rumba", recorded and mixed at Studio Village (France), and engineered by Diego Santiago.
We are covering here the group's biography for the first time. We also have some MP3 samples!
The band was born at the end of the eighties, founded by Michel "Matelot" Modeste, a Gypsy drummer and his brother who plays guitar and sings. They began playing in clubs and pubs singing songs of other artists like PERET (the man who created the "Rumba Flamenca"), GYPSY KINGS, and others.
After three years they were joined by Renaud Prados, another guitarist and singer. Already as a child, Renaud fell in love with Spanish music. His Spanish Andalousian blood brought a new feeling into the trio. After playing with the band for a few years, Renauld began writing his own songs. The band soon recorded an album with a great Gypsy sound, which unfortunately hadn't too much success in the Gypsy community. His voice and his compass (the hand with Flamenco guitar) are a real motor for the sound of the band.
Five years ago they met Tony Garcia, a very impulsive and strong bass player, half Gypsy by his mother side, Tony had already worked with a French singer Michele Torr, for 20 years with whom travelled all around the world. He even played four times with her at the famous Olympia in Paris.
However, the first rehearsal with Tony had such magic moments that they decided to join forces. Furthermore, Tony had worked with an old friend who was playing keyboards with whom they recorded the first title "El Bailé" (written by Renaud). The song got a lot of airplay on "Radio Latina" in Paris.
Since the character of the band had changed, Matelot decided to give up his position behind the drum kit to bring in his driving style into the percussion. The now vacant drums were soon occupied by Charly Farrugggia, another old friend of the band. Charly is a very experienced drummer and together with Tony he is Fuego's backbone. Throughout his career, Charly has worked with a great number of well know French artists and has recorded in different studios all around Europe.
For personal reasons Matelot's brother had to leave the band two years ago and Davy Santiago, a very talented Gypsy guitarist and singer joined the band. Not only a superb guitar player, Davy is also a fine songwriter. He now shares song writing as well as singing with Renaud. Last but not least there is Sylvain Bouton, the newest member of the band. Before joining "Fuego", Sylvain was playing with another salsa band. He now contributes to the sound colour of "Fuego de Rumba"
