- I use music for self-expression and for community activism, for activating the youth. Music is a means of transferring the message to the world, says Trinidadian singer and songwriter Sheldon Blackman. Sheldon Blackmann is a talented musician who started his singing at a very tender age of five. His father Ras Short I (Garfield Blackman) was one of the pioneers of Soca in the Carribean. Sheldon prefer to call his style of music Jamoo, which means good news. Jamoo is rooted in Soca, mixed with jazz and other carribean, as well as African forms. Well known in the Caribbean and the Caribbean diaspora internationally, this young performer has been on the cutting edge of the musical culture and has performed in the USA, performing in New York, Washington D.C., North Carolina and Atlanta. In the UK, appearing in venues in London like Cargo, Momo,s taking part in the Nothing Hill Carnival. We met Sheldon in Oslo where he has been engaged in a youth project – Afrikan Youth in Norway, the result of which is a CD compilation Kush- the Mixtape containing 10 tracks. Sheldon also actively took part in Afrikan History Week festival, which was held for the first time in Oslo early in April.
Sheldon Blackman emphasizes on spreading consciousness among the youth through music. When asked about the deterioration of conscious lyrics in today’s music Sheldon says a lot of this has to do with the media, where people’s minds are. “For me, the focus is always something with a purpose. The motive is not the dollar but to be honest in my expression and say something that ten years down the line will still be meaning something. Sheldon has so far produced three albums; Remember Me, Remember Me - Reloaded and one Big Fat Love Bomb. The latter was a response to the aftermath of September 11 “where everybody seemed to have nuclear ambition but none had love ambition.” Comments (0)
