An Interview with Survival - A Reggae Musician from Ghana

"Mother Earth"
CD Release

Q
. Yes, Survival! It has been a long time since…

S: Yeah man!

Q. Can you give us a short background to your latest release “Mother Earth”?

S. As you said, it has been a long time since my last release, that's true. The new album that is out now "Mother Earth" is a different thing. Everything was recorded in Ghana after I buck'upon a producer who is really talented. That's why the album came up like that.'

Q. So from Norway you went to Africa to make music

S. Yes, I.

Q. How do you see the difference between making music in Europe, as a reggae musician, and making the same music in Africa?

S. It is very different, because here you have to really fight, and do a lot of things to get the right sound, which you might not get; because the producers are rock oriented and they do not want to listen to musicians, as I see it. But back in Africa the producers really listen to you as a musician. So producing in Africa is really different from here.

Q. So do you mean that producers in Norway have not come that far in understanding African music or is it just lack of interest

S. I think it is lack of interest, because, for example, I play reggae music and the producers have not grown up with this music, you know, so I think they should listen to the artist and…you know…get the best from the artist, instead of listening to themselves.

Q. “Mother Earth” is a twelve tracks release. Do you have any plans of releasing a dub version? Survival, a musician from Ghana. Mother Earth release. Reggae album

S. Oh, yes mi bredren… I am thinking of coming up in the spring with a dub version, “Survival in Dub” album, so I'll be coming up with some music.

Q. How do you see the future of reggae in Africa?

S. It’s going high, you know. Because if you check African musicians, even those that live in Europe, most of these people are doing their best. It is not like yesterday, you know, when it was easy to get promotion.Today it is really hard for an artist to get that kind of promotion, that’s why we are not hearing a lot of them today. But there are lot of them on the ground who would like to come up and be heard.

Q. There is too much talk of war going on. What do you think artists should be doing?

S. I think artists should fight evil elements. War is evil. We reggae musicians talk about peace and love. So I think all artists should stand up and fight these wicked elements.
